It’s time to celebrate Mother Earth on April 22nd! We’ve got three ways for you to go green on this very special day for us. But first, let’s talk about how Earth Day came to the sustainable party and why it means so much to our team.
What is Earth Day?
According to the official Earth Day website, the first Earth Day was on April 22nd, 1970. Before its creation, many industries across America were pumping massive amounts of toxic waste into the environment. There was little concern for how this toxic waste would affect the environment long term. After a huge oil spill in 1969, Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin decided to host an educational event on college campuses to teach the public about the importance of global sustainability. The event then morphed into what we now call Earth Day over the next year.
Why are we celebrating Earth Day?
Our thrift stores across America are advocates for slow fashion and sustainability. To clarify, when you choose to shop at our stores, you are keeping textile waste out of landfills and reducing pollution from fast fashion clothing production. The World Economic Forum states that the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of humanity’s carbon emissions. Reducing your consumption of fast fashion can help decrease pollution from the fashion industry.
How you can celebrate Earth Day:
1. Recycle and donate your clothing to local thrift stores.
Our charitable partners in our stores accept gently used clothing and household items! When you are ready to give your items a second life, head over to our recycling centers located inside our stores.
2. Repurpose your clothing into Earth Day crafts or new garments.
Thrifted DIY crafts can definitely be a great way to celebrate Earth Day. A simple coat of paint or a pair of scissors and lead to a completely new look for your items. Check out our blog post for more ideas on thrifted DIY crafts.
