Not all fashion is the same. Find out what kind of clothing is in your closet with this insight into the fashion industry.
What is fast fashion?
Companies that mass produce a supply of clothing at a low cost and low quality for the demanding consumer.
What is slow fashion?
Clothing that you use for years made of quality fabric that contributes to sustainability. This ultimately means slow fashion helps reduce overall global waste.
How can you tell the difference?
If you can see right through a piece of clothing, odds are it’s bad quality. A 100% cotton shirt doesn’t mean it is 100% good quality. If your 100% cotton shirt is showing signs of wear after a couple washes, the cotton fibers may be low quality. A stretch test can also determine a garment’s quality. If your garment doesn’t keep its shape after being stretched, it’s bad quality.
Quality over Quantity
You will actually end up saving money if you buy a quality item, rather than buying a fast fashion item. Take it from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American family spends $1,700 on clothes every year. Investing in your wardrobe will keep you from spending money every year on low-quality clothes that you will have to replace a couple months later. Love it or don’t buy it.
Wearable for Years
Clothing that transcends annual fashion styles will save you money for years to come. These outfits give you the option to focus on trending accessories and your original style. Embrace your own style, not the style predetermined by others.
Shift to Thrift
According to Business Insider, the fashion industry produces 10% of all human carbon emissions and it’s the second-largest consumer of the world’s water supply. Reducing the amount of fast fashion you consume may help reduce these emissions and free up our already limited water supply. Thrifting is a great opportunity for amazing fashion finds and a chance to contribute to global sustainability.
